By 1882, Baro Kuthi Rajbari had evolved into a significant Bengali socio-cultural center, frequently hosting Europeans alongside Bengali elites. Notably Paikpara’s Raja also kandi Zamindar, Raja Pratap Chandra Sinha and Ishwar Chandra Sinha, ardent patrons of the arts, played a crucial role in this transformation. Their dedication led to the founding of the ‘Belgachia Natyasala,’ where Pandit Ram Narayan’s Sanskrit drama ‘Ratnavali’ was performed. Under the guidance of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, an English version of the drama was also staged, achieving remarkable success and captivating the European audience.
This success inspired Michael Madhusudan Dutt to write his own Bengali drama, ‘Sharmistha,’ which premiered the following year at the same venue.
